Pionero británico en las áreas automovilística y aeronáutica. Produjo el primer automóvil británico en 1896, un modelo de un cilindro y cinco caballos de fuerza. Luego de producir exitosamente modelos mejorados, obtuvo el apoyo financiero necesario para producir cientos de automóviles en los años siguientes, vehículos notables por su escasa vibración, aspecto elegante y una parrilla para el equipaje. Publicó un importante informe (1897) acerca de los principios del vuelo de objetos más pesados que el aire y, más tarde, textos especializados sobre aeronáutica.
